New Site of Community Importance in the waters of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

The marine surface of ‘Red Natura 2000’ grows, so that 8% of the Spanish seas are now protected.

The European Commission’s proposal to include in the list of Sites of Community Importance (LIC) of ‘the Red Natura 2000’ the marine space of the east and south of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura has been approved.

Spain will increase the marine surface of ‘Red Natura 2000’ in more than 14,000km2, meaning that 8% of the Spanish seas are protected. In this way Spain approaches the target set by the Convention on Biological Diversity to protect 10% of the marine zones by the year 2020.

The proposal adds to nine other Sites of Community Importance and to the declaration of 39 zones for the special protection of birds approved in 2014.

The inclusion of the marine space Lanzarote – Fuerteventura in the ‘Red Natura 2000’ arrives after an exhaustive study of the area under the project ‘Life + Indemares’
